ABOUT NDD & ADHD

Understanding Neurodevelopmental Disorders & executive functioning and finding the right support.

The World Health Organization defines NDDs (Neurodevelopmental Disorders) as “behavioral and cognitive disorders that arise during the developmental period and involve significant difficulties in the acquisition and execution of specific intellectual, motor, language, or social functions. The DSM 5 includes a new chapter on NDD and includes ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder), Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Rett syndrome, FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) and more.

  • Attention‑Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that are strong enough to impact daily life at home, school, work, or in relationships.
  • ADHD often begins in childhood and may continue into adulthood. It can affect focus, organization, emotional regulation, and behaviour across multiple settings.
  • Research shows ADHD is linked to differences in brain structure, neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, and how the brain manages attention and rewards.

Executive functioning refers to the set of thinking skills that help us manage daily life. These skills include the ability to:

  • Plan and organize
  • Focus attention
  • Remember instructions
  • Manage time
  • Regulate emotions
  • Start and complete tasks

These skills are managed primarily by the prefrontal cortex, which continues developing into the mid‑20s. Difficulties with executive functioning are common in neurodevelopmental conditions such as FASD and ADHD.

Executive functioning skills are essential for everyone, and challenges can appear at any age.
However, difficulties are more common among individuals who experience:

  • ADHD or suspected ADHD
  • Learning differences
  • Neurodivergence (including autism)
  • Prenatal substance exposure
  • Mental health conditions affecting focus, memory, or regulation

Executive functioning challenges can influence school, work, parenting, daily routines, and emotional wellness
